This tool works backwards from a target dose to the weight of each ingredient, using the elemental mineral content of each compound.

How amounts are derived

Every mineral salt is only partly the mineral itself.

Grams of ingredient = target milligrams / elemental mass fraction. Fractions come from each compound's molecular formula and molar mass.

Mass fractions used

  • Sodium chloride: 39.34% Na
  • Sodium citrate: 23.1% Na
  • Potassium chloride: 52.45% K
  • Potassium citrate (monohydrate): 36.2% K
  • Magnesium oxide: 60.3% Mg
  • Magnesium citrate: 16.2% Mg
  • Magnesium malate: 15.6% Mg
  • Magnesium glycinate: 14.1% Mg

Default target

800 mg sodium, 240 mg potassium and 60 mg magnesium is the Saltivate per-serving profile.

Limitations 4
  • Absorption differs between compounds. Magnesium oxide is the most concentrated per gram and the most poorly absorbed, so equal elemental doses are not equally useful.
  • Home scales are usually the limiting factor. Weighing 60 mg accurately needs a scale reading to 0.001 g, which is why batching is the practical approach.
  • Ingredient purity varies by supplier. These fractions assume the pure compound.
  • This tool does not recommend a dose for you, and is not medical advice.

Make your own LMNT, or don't

An LMNT stick is three minerals in water: 1000mg sodium, 200mg potassium, 60mg magnesium, plus stevia for taste. Weigh those into 16 to 32 oz with a squeeze of citrus and you have made it yourself for pennies a glass.

The small amounts are the hard part. Sodium is forgiving, but 200mg of potassium and 60mg of magnesium turn a drink bitter the moment you overshoot, so a milligram scale is worth it. Weighing a 30-serving batch once, then scooping one serving per glass, is the version most people settle on.

Or skip it. Saltivate is the same idea premeasured: 800mg sodium, 240mg potassium, 60mg magnesium, zero sugar, sweetened with Reb M rather than stevia, and 100% of the Daily Value of vitamin C. The bulk jar costs less per serving than the sticks.

Weigh these into 16 to 32 oz of water with a squeeze of citrus. A milligram scale is worth it: potassium and magnesium turn bitter fast.

LMNT recipe, answered

How do you make LMNT at home?

Weigh 1000mg sodium, 200mg potassium and 60mg magnesium into 16 to 32 oz of water. In common salts that is about 2.5g table salt, 0.4g potassium chloride and 0.4g magnesium malate. Add citrus for taste.

What is the LMNT recipe?

LMNT is 1000mg sodium, 200mg potassium and 60mg magnesium, sweetened with stevia. The calculator above turns that into grams or teaspoons and scales it to any batch size.

Is homemade LMNT cheaper than buying it?

Per serving, usually, if you already own a milligram scale and the three salts. You trade money for time: every dose gets weighed. A bulk jar of Saltivate lands between the two on price, with none of the weighing.

Can I make a bulk batch of LMNT?

Yes. Multiply each amount by your serving count, weigh it once, mix well, then scoop one serving per glass. The calculator does the math for a 30 or 90 serving batch.

Is there an LMNT dupe I can buy?

Saltivate is the closest done-for-you version: high sodium, zero sugar, no stevia, HSA/FSA card eligible. It runs 800mg sodium to LMNT's 1000mg, so scoop a little extra from the jar to match.
