Electrolytes vs minerals: what's the difference?

Iron, zinc, sodium, and potassium are all dietary minerals, and only some of them belong in a water bottle. Every electrolyte in a hydration mix is a mineral, but a mineral only counts as an electrolyte once it dissolves into charged particles in water. If you sweat hard, sit in a sauna, eat keto, or manage a condition that runs through sodium, that difference tells you which ones to replace.

What counts as a mineral

A dietary mineral is an inorganic element your body needs and cannot make: sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, iron, zinc, iodine, selenium, and a handful of others. Your body uses them to build bone, carry oxygen, run enzymes, and fire nerves. It cannot produce any of them, so they all come from food and drink.

Most minerals do their work bound into something larger: iron inside hemoglobin, zinc inside enzymes, calcium locked into bone. The category is about what they are made of, so whether one leaves your body in sweat is a separate question.

What makes a mineral an electrolyte

Electrolytes are named for what happens when they dissolve. Certain compounds split in water into electrically charged particles called ions: sodium chloride becomes Na+ and Cl-, potassium citrate releases K+. Your body runs on those charges to move fluid in and out of cells, fire nerve impulses, contract muscles, and hold blood pH steady.

The clinical list of electrolytes is short: sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, chloride, phosphate, and bicarbonate. Sodium in a dry salt crystal sits there as a mineral and nothing else. Dissolved in the water of your blood and sweat, the same sodium carries a charge and moves fluid across cell membranes.

Are minerals and electrolytes the same thing?

They are not the same thing, though the overlap covers everything a hydration mix carries, so the two words often get swapped.

Iron, zinc, and selenium are minerals that never show up in a hydration formula, because fluid balance and electrical signaling are not what they do. Bicarbonate runs the other way. Your body makes it on its own, so it is an electrolyte and not a dietary mineral at all.

Which minerals matter for hydration

Sweat is mostly water, and the electrolytes it carries are dominated by sodium and chloride, with far smaller amounts of potassium, magnesium, and calcium. A liter of sweat can carry anywhere from about 200 to over 1,800mg of sodium, depending on the person and the conditions. Iron and zinc barely register, so a hydration mix that lists them is padding the label.

Our serving carries 800mg of sodium (as sodium chloride), 240mg of potassium (as potassium citrate), and 60mg of magnesium (as dimagnesium malate), in roughly the proportions sweat takes them out. What you personally lose depends on your sweat rate and how salty your sweat runs, and how much sodium you lose in sweat is worth pinning down before you decide how much to put back.

When one label says minerals and another says electrolytes, read past the word and look at the panel. What matters is whether the sodium, potassium, and magnesium are there in amounts that match what you lose.
