Where the bloating complaint comes from
Any drink can sit heavy if you mix it too strong or drink it too fast. But when the discomfort shows up with one specific powder and follows it consistently, the label deserves a look before you blame electrolytes in general. Sodium, potassium, and magnesium at normal serving amounts dissolve and absorb readily. What sugar alcohols are and why brands use them
Sugar alcohols are a family of sweeteners that includes erythritol, xylitol, sorbitol, maltitol, and mannitol. They taste close to sugar, add bulk and body to a powder, cost little, and count as zero grams of sugar on a US nutrition panel. For a formulator that is a convenient package: sweetness, texture, and a clean front label from one ingredient.
The trade-off is absorption. Sugar alcohols absorb slowly and incompletely in the small intestine. The portion that is not absorbed pulls water along with it and ferments in the gut, which is where the gas, gurgling, and bloating come from. Some sorbitol and mannitol products even carry a laxative-effect notice on the label for this reason. Tolerance varies widely by person and by dose. Erythritol is generally the gentlest of the group, since most of it is absorbed and passed unchanged, while sorbitol, maltitol, and xylitol are the ones people notice more often.
Zero sugar on the front does not mean sugar-alcohol-free
On a US label, sugar means glucose, fructose, sucrose, and their relatives. Sugar alcohols are counted separately, so a powder can lean heavily on erythritol and still print zero sugar on the front. Naturally sweetened does not settle it either, since erythritol is routinely marketed as natural. The only reliable place to check is the ingredient list.
The ten-second label check
- Scan the ingredient list for words ending in itol: erythritol, xylitol, sorbitol, maltitol, mannitol.
- Check the facts panel for a sugar alcohol line under total carbohydrate.
- Note the position. Ingredients are listed by weight, so a sugar alcohol in the first two or three slots makes up a meaningful share of the serving.
That is the whole check. If you sweat enough to use more than one serving a day, position matters even more, because the sugar alcohol dose scales with every stick or scoop.

No. They are approved, widely used, and plenty of people handle them without trouble. This is a comfort question. If electrolyte drinks leave you gassy or bloated, the sugar alcohol content is a reasonable first thing to check.
Which sugar alcohol is easiest on the stomach?

Is stevia a sugar alcohol?
