Electrolyte Freezer Pops

Homemade electrolyte freezer pops on crushed ice with a Saltivate Orange stick packet

These electrolyte freezer pops are the zero-sugar answer to the Gatorade Freeze Pops stocked by the case at pools, job sites, and summer camps. Each pop is a frozen sleeve of Saltivate Orange, so it helps replace the sodium you lose in sweat while it cools you down. The mix stirs into cold water in about a minute, filling the sleeves takes about five minutes of hands-on time, and the freezer does the rest overnight. The flavor lands lightly salty-sweet, like a melted orange ice pop with the sugar dialed out, and it freezes to a clean frosty white, since the mix has no dyes. Keep a batch on hand for after mowing the lawn, mid-shift breaks, or the walk home from a hot practice. One batch makes ten pops.

Ingredients

Makes ten 3 oz freezer pops, using 2 servings of Saltivate across the batch.

  • 4 cups (950 ml) cold water
  • 2 Saltivate Orange stick packs
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice, optional, for extra brightness
  • 10 zip-top ice pop sleeves (3 oz size)

Instructions

  1. Stir 2 Saltivate Orange stick packs into 4 cups (950 ml) of cold water until fully dissolved, about 1 minute.
  2. Stir in the lemon juice, if using.
  3. Stand the sleeves upright in a tall glass or pitcher, or use a small funnel, and fill each one to the fill line, leaving about an inch of headspace for expansion.
  4. Seal the sleeves and lay them flat on a small tray in the freezer. Freeze at least 4 hours; overnight is best.
  5. To serve, run a pop under warm water for a few seconds, then snip the top with scissors.

Tips

  • Each pop carries about a fifth of a serving of electrolytes, roughly 160mg of sodium, so a couple of pops after a sweaty afternoon adds up without overdoing it.
  • Mango Pineapple and Watermelon work at the same ratio if you want a mixed batch. Raw Unflavored freezes plain with a light salty edge that sharpens fruit flavors, so pair it with a splash of juice.
  • Keep pops frozen flat for up to 3 months. Label the batch with painter's tape and a date so the freezer rotation stays honest.

This recipe uses Saltivate Orange on-the-go packets: 800mg sodium, 240mg potassium, and 60mg magnesium per stick, with zero sugar and no stevia.
