The salty dog is the classic drink literally named for its salt rim, and this version gives that rim a job. Instead of plain coarse salt, the glass gets dipped in Saltivate Orange, an electrolyte powder with 800mg of sodium per stick that tastes lightly salty-sweet with a citrus note that plays nicely off grapefruit. The build stays true to the original: fresh grapefruit juice over ice, vodka if you want it, with the first sip pulling sharp grapefruit through that salty-sweet crust.
Ingredients
Makes 2 drinks.
- 1 stick Saltivate Orange, for the rim
- 8 oz (240 ml) fresh grapefruit juice (about 2 large grapefruits)
- 1 tsp flaky sea salt, optional, for extra crunch on the rim
- 1 grapefruit wedge, plus 2 thin grapefruit slices for garnish
- Ice
- 3 oz (90 ml) vodka, optional (1 1/2 oz per drink)
Instructions
- Empty the Saltivate Orange stick onto a small plate. Stir in the flaky salt if you want a crunchier rim.
- Run the grapefruit wedge around the rim of two rocks glasses, then twist each rim in the powder to coat. Tap off the excess.
- Fill each glass with ice, holding it by the base so the rim stays intact.
- Add 1 1/2 oz (45 ml) vodka to each glass, if using, then pour in 4 oz (120 ml) grapefruit juice.
- Stir gently, garnish with a grapefruit slice, and serve.
Serving suggestions and variations
- Gin instead of vodka is the older version of the salty dog. Keep it at 1 1/2 oz per drink.
- For an alcohol-free round, swap the vodka for chilled sparkling water. The rim still does the work.
- One stick rims about four glasses, so each drink picks up roughly a quarter serving of electrolytes. Keep the leftover powder in a small sealed container for the next round.
