Every parent has typed homemade pedialyte recipe into a phone at 2 a.m. while a kid works through a stomach bug. This is the version worth saving: plain water, a small splash of apple juice for a touch of sweetness, and one stick of Saltivate Raw Unflavored, which carries 800mg of sodium plus 240mg of potassium and 60mg of magnesium with no sugar and no stevia. The finished drink tastes like lightly salted, faintly sweet apple water, mild enough for an unsettled stomach.
Ingredients
Makes 32 oz (950 ml), about four 8-oz (240 ml) glasses. One full serving of electrolytes across the batch, so each glass carries a quarter serving.
- 1 stick pack Saltivate Raw Unflavored
- 28 oz (3 1/2 cups, 840 ml) cold water
- 4 oz (1/2 cup, 120 ml) apple juice
- Optional: a small squeeze of fresh lemon
Instructions
- Pour the water into a quart jar or small pitcher.
- Add the apple juice and the lemon, if using.
- Empty in the stick pack and stir or shake until dissolved, about 15 seconds.
- Refrigerate and serve cold, in small sips at first, working up to a full glass as the stomach settles.
Serving suggestions and variations
- Swap the apple juice for white grape juice, or leave the sweetener out entirely; the drink works fine as lightly salted plain water.
- For a kid who refuses to sip, pour part of the batch into an ice cube tray or popsicle molds and freeze for at least 4 hours. A standard 3-oz (90 ml) pop carries about a tenth of a serving of electrolytes.
- Keeps covered in the fridge for 48 hours. Give it a quick stir before pouring.
Per serving: about 15 kcal (estimate).
